The brand new, highly anticipated Regie Routman in Residence DVD-based professional development program will be presented by its creators at this highly interactive two-day institute. The groundbreaking Regie Routman in Residence program provides a full year of professional development and promises to help teachers gain expertise, raise student achievement, and boost test scores—as it already has in each of its pilot sites in Colorado, Tennessee, and Washington.

Regie Routman, longtime teacher and author, along with project collaborators Marilyn Jerde and Sandra Garcia, will explicitly guide you through the Regie Routman in Residence Transforming Our Teaching projects:

  • Transforming Our Teaching Through Reading/Writing Connections
  • Transforming Our Teaching Through Writing for Audience and Purpose
  • Transforming Our Teaching Through Reading to Understand

Regie will explain and discuss how and why the projects were developed, the importance of defining and aligning beliefs and practices across the grades, the background of the classrooms and schools in the videos, and the impact implementation has had on improving student achievement, accelerating professional development, and enhancing the culture of schools and districts.

Program Highlights

Regie, Marilyn, and Sandra will demonstrate and apply the Optimal Learning Model, beginning with how to implement a project in your school and/or district. Participants will have an opportunity to work in small groups and to work with each of the presenters.

Participants will learn how to:
  • Establish and sustain ongoing professional conversations that move teaching and learning forward
  • Plan for meaningful and effective yearlong professional development using the Getting Started Guide
  • Create, "train," and sustain a Literacy Team that ensures successful school implementation
  • Employ the Facilitator's Guide to have every session run effectively and efficiently
  • Introduce the videos and guide discussion following whole group viewing
  • Apply an Optimal Learning Model ("I do it," "We do it," "You do it") that provides teachers and students the support and guidance they need to move from dependence to independence
  • Use the language of helpful response and feedback to affirm the student, assess, teach, and move learning forward
  • Improve teaching, assessing, and learning across the curriculum with the content from every Transforming Our Teaching session
  • Analyze and utilize the detailed Deeper Understanding charts to help plan for and guide the Try it/Apply it part of every session
  • Maximize the use of the Professional Development Notebook
  • Utilize the accompanying website to view session videos, participate in local and national professional conversations, and download professional articles, lesson plans, and student work samples.
The presenters will provide multiple opportunities for interaction and guided practice with the Transforming Our Teaching materials as well as time for questions and answers throughout the Institute.

Who Should Attend?

Educators and Teams of Educators* who:
  • have purchased Regie Routman in Residence and are interested in learning more about implementation in their school or district
  • OR

  • are interested in purchasing Regie Routman in Residence and seek a better understanding of the product and its potential.
This workshop introduces and makes extensive use of several important components of Regie Routman in Residence. Participants will receive these components as part of a Getting Started Pack that includes: facilitators' guides from selected sessions one Professional Development Notebook one copy of Teaching Essentials, the professional book at the heart of Regie Routman in Residence.
